CBT Licence - Compulsory Basic Training
Before you can ride any motorcycle or moped as a learner, it is a legal requirement to have passed your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
If your test is successfulll, you will then be issued with your C.B.T. certificate (DL196) which is valid for a period of two years.

 

If you have a full car licence ( issued prior to February 2001) you are automatically entitled to a full moped licence and it is not compulsory for you to complete the CBT.

Learner Legal Riders
At age 16 you can ride a bike or scooter with an engine no larger than 49cc and restricted to no more than 30mph.
If you are aged 17 years and older, you can ride a bike or scooter with an engine no larger than 125cc and which has a power output restricted to no more than 14.6bhp. You must always display L-Plates on your bike, and you may not carry passengers or ride on motorways.
